Unlock the Power of Crystals: Charge Your Crystals to Charge Yourself!

Crystals have been used throughout history for a variety of purposes. From healing and grounding to abundance and enlightenment, there are so many different ways that crystals help us energetically. Since crystals take on the energies that they come into contact with, it’s important to consider what they may be energetically storing. This is especially important if they’re used in meditation or healing, but remember that you don’t know what they may have come into contact with before coming to you. It is crucial to cleanse and recharge your crystals not only before their initial use but also periodically during their use.

Cleansing your crystals can help to remove any unwanted energies and restore their natural healing properties. Cleansing your crystals can also help you to connect more deeply with them, allowing you to access their full potential.

How did this practice begin?

It’s impossible to pinpoint where the practice of charging crystals began historically, but the practice of using crystals for their energetic purposes has its roots in various spiritual and healing traditions. Many ancient cultures, including the Greeks, Egyptians, and Indigenous Peoples, believed in the power of crystals for healing and protection.

One thing that connects each of these spiritual uses is the practice of cleansing crystals to rid them of stagnant energies. Each tradition has a different preferred cleansing method. When you’re choosing a method to charge your crystals, consider which resonates the most with or, or which is most accessible to you.

Ways to Cleanse Your Crystals

There are a variety of different methods, and it’s up to you to choose what works best in your own practice. Some methods are not suited for all crystals, so any exceptions will be noted in the description.

Water Cleansing

There are multiple ways to use water to cleanse your crystals. One of the more popular methods is to soak your crystals overnight in the light of a full moon – or by using
moon water. Another popular method is to run fresh, cool water over your crystals and visualize the stagnant energy being washed away with each drop of water. If water is your cleansing method of choice, use whichever form resonates the most with you. Remember, there’s no wrong way to cleanse your crystals.

*Note: There are some crystals that are formed by calcified minerals that are susceptible to dissolving in water. Crystals such as Black Tourmaline and Hematite should not get wet. Please research whether your crystal will be damaged by water cleansing before using this method.

Air Cleansing

Cleansing with Sage

Another method is using the element of air to cleanse your crystals. While this may seem difficult, many spiritualities use the smoke of an energetically active herb, or even the smoke from incense to harness the power of air.

Sage is an herb that is particularly powerful for removing negative and stagnant energies. Burning a bundle of sage to cleanse the energy of an object or space is called smudging. When smudging to cleanse your crystals, imagine the negative energy being enveloped and carried away by the smoke.

It’s important to note that some popular methods of smudging, such as using white sage or palo santo, are considered a closed practice by Indigenous peoples. White sage is already an endangered plant, so if you’re not a part of this culture – it’s a better idea to use a different type of sage – such as buffalo. Remember as well to always take care when using fire and dispose of your ashes in a safe manner. It’s recommended to bury your ashes once your smudge stick has been safely extinguished for a minimum of 24 hours. This returns the energy you used back to the earth.

Cleansing with Selenite

Selenite charging plate

When purchasing a selenite plate for cleansing purposes, you’ll want to make sure that you cleanse your plate before using it on your other stones. This is especially important because it is a crystal itself. Selenite tends to be delicate, and it’s important to
never run it under water, as it will dissolve. Use an alternate method such as sound, or the light of the moon to cleanse your charging plate.

When using the plate to cleanse other stones; set your intentions before placing them on the plate. Leave your crystals on the plate for at least an hour, as it takes time for the selenite to move the energies.

Other Methods To Clear Away Old Energy

There are many other methods that people find effective in cleansing their crystals. Methods such as leaving your crystals out under the light of a full moon or in the light of the sun, work by harnessing the new energy that comes with each moon cycle, or with the dawn of a new day.

Some people prefer to use methods like sound or visualization. Sound works by meeting the vibrations of the energies in the crystal – loosening and guiding these energies away from the stone. Visualization can work in a similar way, by focusing energy on the stone and imagining the stagnant energy loosening and working away.

A final popular method is submerging your crystals in a bowl of brown rice. While it sounds more suited to absorbing water from an electronic device, brown rice is known to absorb negative energies as well. Similar to using a selenite plate, this method involves submerging your crystals for at least an hour.

Go Forth and Cleanse

Whichever method you choose, cleansing your crystals is an important step that you should not skip before working with them. Remember to always research the limitations of your crystal if using a method that involves water or heat. When in doubt a gentle cleansing method is always best.
